Prelim: Audience Research- Online Survey

In order to attain as much data as possible from the target audience, I needed to carry out a way for me to get information about the desired form for my magazine, so it could appeal to the correct demographic. I decided to carry out a survey in the form of a questionnaire online so I could get people's thoughts and opinions about ideas for my magazine cover. I attached the link on social media so that people could access it and respond based on their own opinion.

In addition to these multiple choice questions based on fashion magazines, I also had a few questions at the beginning asking about ages and gender in order to make sure that the correct demographic (14-18 year olds) were answering the questions.

Here I have just taken print screens of the generated report of my survey, which shows the most popular choices and I have analysed this in depth also talked about how I am going to incorporate this into my own magazine cover.



Question 1:  What fashion genre applies to you most? 

I thought that this question would be vital in helping me create a magazine cover featuring a model wearing clothes that the target audience can not only relate to but also enjoy seeing. This will make the magazine more appealing to them. If one genre got the most votes it shows that is most popular among 14-18 year olds which then helps me to get an idea as to what to include on my own cover. Urban style was clearly the most popular choice among the target audience and this gives me a better understanding of the stylistic options I should choose for my model.


Question 2:  Have u ever read a fashion magazine before?

I included this question as it would assist me in knowing if those that completed the survey actually knew what elements were involved in a fashion magazine cover. The majority had answered yes to this which was helpful because it communicated that they had shown interest in it.


Question 3:  Which of these magazines have you heard of? 

This question was able to give me a good idea of the most popular magazines among teenagers. The fact that almost everyone who voted chose Vogue shows that it's very well known and popular. Its features are easily recognised and I decided to keep this in mind when creating my own cover. Vogue is quite unique however still follows the conventions of a magazine cover and it this is what makes it so easily recognisable. The top most well known magazines are quite popular and have a huge amount of publicity which makes it understandable as to why they are most commonly heard of.


Question 4:  From these fashion magazines, which one appeals to you the most?

This question tied in quite well with the previous and was gave a result as to which cover was most appealing to the target audience. Identical to the answer for question 3, the majority chose vogue. This could be due to a range of factors ie. the model, popularity of the magazine or other. This showed me what magazine covers people enjoy looking at most and considering that magazine's particular style, I will be able to keep this in mind when creating my own.



Question 5: What features in particular attract you on magazine cover?

Linking in with the question before this, I chose to ask this question as I thought it would be important in finding out what catches people's eye when they first look at a magazine. I included options such as model, colours, coverlines and masthead. From the results it can be seen that the majority thought the model was the main thing they first see followed by the colours. This could be the reason that Vogue was the most popular choice previously, due to the model featured. The coverlines and title of the magazine weren't at all chosen which shows how they don't play an important role on magazine covers to the specific audience.I can use this information on my own magazine cover so that the target demographic will find it appealing.



Question  6:  Which colour scheme are you most drawn to?

Due to the fact that colour is an imprtant aspect in magazine covers, I chose to include this question to see wh
ich colours were most appealing to whoever was filling out the survey. I added a variety of options so there wouldn't  be any sort of limitations. The most popular choices inlcuded a shade of yellow which could show the interest in that colour as it seems to be a popular colour these days. It's also quite bright and stands out which catches attention. The other colours included in the top choices are mostly shades of one colour such as either blue or red. Bearing this in mind, I think it would be a good idea to include one colour with a few shades and contrast this with a bright colour.



Question 7: What font would you prefer to have on a magazine?

This was just to give me an idea of what type of font people preferred to read or look at on a magazine cover and looking at the results, it shows that the most popular choices of fonts were ones that were quite simple. My original idea for my cover was to have a fairly simple font, especially for the coverlines and then add more different styles to other aspects such as colours or the main image itself. This was so that the typography wasn't difficult to read as sometimes simplicity is more effective.
